Perisher XC: A Note on Our Journey and Current Status

What is Perisher XC (PXC)?

Perisher XC (PXC) is an initiative that began on November 11, 2012, with around 30 people gathering to kickstart an organization whose primary objective was to promote and grow cross-country skiing (XC skiing) in Perisher and the Park. Since its inception, PXC has been actively involved in promoting XC skiing through various means, including a dedicated website, grooming reports, Facebook and Instagram pages, the PXC Cup, and this very newsletter. Promoting XC Ski Week has also been a significant part of our efforts. Additionally, PXC has played a role in advocating for infrastructure improvements to support XC skiing.

PXC continues to thrive through the ongoing work of a few dedicated volunteers, primarily those already involved with the Snow Australia NSWACT XC committee. Our efforts of late have been focused on maintaining our communication tools and running the events we have established. As we grow it would be good to get new blood in to take PXC to the next level in finding new ways to promote XC skiing.

Despite the challenges faced by many sporting clubs over the last 10-20 years, PXC has not abandoned its key objectives. The mission remains to promote this special activity widely and encourage more people to get involved in all the aspects of XC Skiing.

Social Media – It's Important

A key realization is the importance of promoting the XC skiing community in Perisher and leveraging social media to achieve this. Social media provides the quickest and easiest way to inform the public about what is available at the Nordic Shelter and the Perisher XC Centre.

Perisher XC supports everyone who puts on a pair of XC skis. From racers to recreational skiers, ski equipment and services providers, ski clubs, families, and individuals, to the Nordic Shelter itself, The PXC Facebook page aims to reflect all these aspects.

How You Can Help

·       Help By Posting: Building a community requires as many people as possible to get involved. There are currently over 900 Facebook followers, and with your help, this could grow to 1500 or more by the end of the 2024 winter season. The PXC Facebook page is private for some measure of control, but posting rights can be granted to as many people as desired. If you'd like to be included, email Wayne at info@perisherxcountry.org with your name and mobile number, and it will be done. Growing follower numbers will be easier if many people contribute a few posts each rather than a few doing all the work.

·       Help Do Posts on Saturdays and/or Sundays: To help distribute the workload, it would be beneficial to have a roster or list of interested people who can post updates on weekends or specific days, which typically covers whatever event is being held at the Perisher XC Centre.

·       Help With Admin: It would also be helpful to have a few people with social media experience who can oversee the page as admins, just in case the current admins miss any potential issues. Additionally, having extra people to discuss improvements with would be valuable.

To discuss any of the above, you can call Wayne at 0481 268 598. It may be best to text first so I know who is calling.
