Working Bee Update - Past & Coming

April Working Bee Report

There was a great turn out for the 17th-18th of April working bee with 16 people there on Saturday and 14 on Sunday. Thanks to Rowan Christie, Peter & Rhonda Cunningham, Margaret Mahoney, Bruce, Bev and Andrew Porter, John Sim, Virpi Komulainen, Terry Funk, Michael Stenning, Rick Alexander, Arnold B'Bras, Suzanne Gabriele, Garry McDougall and Wayne Pethybridge.

Out on the trails, the Wheatley Link and Porcupine Link and Trail were audited, along with fixing trail markers, putting in sighter poles, brush cutting, fixing snow fences and other bits and pieces. Very busy with a lot done.

The audits have uncovered plenty of maintenance work remaining out on the Wheatley Link and Porcupine Link and Trail before winter. The trails all the way to Betts Camp and further would have been audited except the National Parks are working in the area with helicopters carting stone materials to the new walking trails. So maybe a project for next time.

In the Nordic Shelter painting continues and external sealing of walls was done by our experienced volunteer trade professionals, Rick and Rowan.

May 1st-2nd Working Bee

A new project is starting - wet areas within the sprint loop will be eventually covered by specially designed bridging. This is the result of a huge amount of work done by Friedl Bartsch and Peter Cunningham and others, over the last several years, to design and get approval for this new bridging method. The bridges will help protect sprint loop areas from wash-outs and provide a more reliable snow cover. This is a long term project and will require further funding in addition to that obtained by NSW Biathlon.

Work is still needed on Wheatley Link and the Porcupine Link and Trail, clearing, fixing pole reflectors/markers and other maintenance.

There is a lot that can be done so if you can make it, please RSVP by emailing Peter Ward at nswxc1@gmail.com. Even if you can only make one day, this would be of great help. Bring sturdy work clothes, gloves and boots suitable for any weather. Also bring food, drink and snacks, and also your own plates, cutlery and cups.

If you require accommodation for either or both Friday & Saturday night at Perisher, this is available gratis, thanks to Canberra Alpine Club (CAC). Please contact Peter Cunningham at peter.petercunningham@gmail.com to book a bed. Bring bed linen, towels and food/drink for self-catering.

As per usual after a busy day doing stuff it is great to relax and socialize back at CAC with drinks and dinner.

Awareness of COVID considerations will be important both at the Shelter and at CAC. The rules will be explained – everyone knows the drill by now. As always, if you have been in a designated “Hot Spot” or have had close or casual contact with someone who has/may have COVID, do not attend – but we would love to see you next time!

After the May working bee, typically there is one more in the first weekend of June. So if you cannot make it to the May working bee, you still have June available.

Note:  The bridging project in the Sprint Loop is considerable which will require additional weekends during May, so if you think you can make it for any of these days or weekends, please contact Peter Cunningham on 0477 356 835 to see which days this work is on.
